From California With Love: SSJ All-Stars Concert

by Hajime 2. August 2011 12:17

On July 16, I braved the "Carmageddon" in Los Angeles and went to a wonderful jazz concert, celebrating the release of a charity CD From California With Love by the SSJ All-Stars. The CD was made by jazz musicians and singers in the Los Angeles area who have been associated with the Japanese jazz label SSJ to help the victims of the 3/11 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami disasters.

The CD, featuring Sue Raney, Alan Broadbent, Leslie Lewis, Kurt Reichenbach, Diane Hubka, Christian Jacob, Tierney Sutton, Jim Cox, Dick Noel, Chris Connor, Frankie Randall and Pinky Winters, is now available at Eastwind Import. All proceeds will be donated to the Japanese Embassy.

The CD release concert was wonderful. It was my first time at Vitello's, a really nice Italian restaurant with an intimate "jazz room" upstairs. The food was great and the sound system was also very good. Despite the feared "Carmageddon," the room was almost full, and everyone enjoyed the superb set of music.

As a Japanese citizen living in the U.S., I'd like to thank everybody involved in this CD and concert who generously donated their talent, art and time for a great cause. My special acknowledgement goes to Diane Hubka who came up with the concept, producer Bill Reed who made it happen, Kurt Reichenbach who not only sang but designed the CD and emcee'd the concert, and Umbrella Media for the studio time and recording/mixing/mastering services.

Here are the photos from the concert on July 16.
