Jazz For Japan Charity CD now available!

by Hajime 16. June 2011 15:30
Jazz For Japan Charity CD is finally here!!

Various Artists / Jazz For Japan [2CD]

Steve Gadd, Lee Ritenour, Marcus Miller, Tom Scott, Billy Childs, Christian McBride, Peter Erskine, Alex Acuna, Alfonso Johnson, Larry Goldings, Chuck Berghofer, Bob James, Keiko Matsui, David T Walker... These and other top jazz musicians gathered at the Capitol Studios in Hollywood on March 23 and 24 to record a very special charity album. All of them have special appreciation for Japanese fans who have enthusiastically supported jazz, the uniquely American art form jazz.

Producer Larry Robinson of Avatar Records conceived the idea of a charity CD and in less than two weeks, the two-day recording session was in progress, thanks to the Capitol Studios and others who generously donated the studio time and volunteered their time. Nobody involved in this project, from recording engineers and caterers, made a dime, and the musicians played their hearts out, thinking about their Japanese friends and hoping to make a positive impact through music.

I was fortunate enough to be in the studio on March 24 to witness the recording (you can read my report here, and I am extremely happy now to make available the resulting album to my customers. I don't have to tell you the caliber and musicianship of those who participated in the recording. The 2-disc set includes 14 tracks, all great performances of jazz standards, both in straight ahead and contemporary flavors.

This is a great jazz album in and of itself. As a bonus, by purchasing this CD, you can make a difference in the lives of the earthquake victims in Japan. As a Japanese citizen living in the U.S., I THANK YOU for your kindness and generosity!

Introducing Fono Acustica Armonico cables

by Hajime 17. May 2011 14:58
Eastwind Import proudly introduces Fono Acustica Armonico cables.

When was the last time you experienced the sensation of real music? Was it a live performance? Perhaps a symphony or a jazz jam... How attainable is this experience in your listening room? Is it close enough for the critical listener to abandon himself to the passion of music?

Now there is Fono Acustica

Fono Acustica is a new, unique cable manufacturer based in Andalucia, Spain. Focused on high end performance with an artisanal aesthetic, their goal is to help audiophiles discover the true potential of their existing electronics. To overcome the performance limitations of existing designs, the principal designers of Fono Acustica spent years in their search for a better solution, and found one in the unique precious metal conductors and simple but labor-intensive, no-compromise construction.

Eastwind Import is proud to be one of their first US dealers and to present their exquisite Armonico audio cable line.

To Spanish vintners the term "Armonico" signifies harmonious balance: the maximum expression of quality. Discover in Armonico Audio Cables a harmony of musical expression and audio perfection, of high performance and the aesthetics of hand-crafted design. In revealing the source they reveal themselves.

Armonico cables are hand-crafted from the finest materials. The wire is manufactured specifically for Fono Acustica as a proprietary blend of silver, gold and palladium, in an optimal ratio determined through listening. These solid-core conductors are then hand-wrapped with teflon dielectric tapes and then put into a silicon tube for EMI/RFI shielding. They are terminated with Oyaide's best connectors and solder alloy approaching 100% pure silver content. Each cable requires 20 hours of assembly and test time. All cables are burned in at factory using specialized equipment.

Armonico cables have a superb resolving power and definition, and super-quiet, "black" background. They have a sense of astonishing openness and immediacy, exteremly wide bandwidth, neutral frequency balance and tonal purity--correct pitch and timbre that is critical to conveying nuance and realism. The music flows with tremendous dynamic energy, weight, and transient attack. All this is achieved without being analytical, hard or cold. Through Armonico cables, the music retains its organic expression.

While expensive, Armonico cables consistently outperform top-of-the-line, super-expensive cables from thw world's top brands, including those costing much more. Armonico cables are perfect for audiophiles who want the best cables in the world to realize the full potential of their existing high end audio systems.

  • Solid core conductors made of a specially blended alloy of silver, gold and palladium
  • Teflon dielectric, silicone tube for RFI/EMI shielding
  • Oyaide's best connectors
  • Pure silver solder
  • African hardwood "block" for resonance control

"The Armonico cables produced a warm, rich, physical sound... The midrange was vivid and harmonically saturated, while the top end was satin-smooth... [T]he Armonicos' richness and romance were so pronounced that I found it easy to imagine many listeners immediately falling in love with them, given the icy quality of so many contemporary recordings and audio components."
- Michael Fremer, Stereophile Vol. 34, No. 6 (June 2011)

"The Spanish-made Fono Acustica: Armonico's are musical to the max in any language... [T]he Armonico's are wonderful, and surely destined to be in some of the world's best systems.
"[T]hese cables undoubtedly perform near the top of the heap."

- Robert H. Levi, Positive Feedback Online Issue 55

Here's what Robert H. Levi, the prominent reviewer for Positive Feedback Online, had to say about the Armonico cables: (Read the full review here.)

Power Cord
"a true sonic beauty"
"increased sense of realism"
"adds a bit of blood and guts to the mid-range performance"

Speaker Cables
"a top speaker cable and most wonderful even if you have ultra-fast diamond tweeters and ceramic drivers"
"Their musicality is undoubted. Their overall presentation of definition is outstanding."

"The mids filled out and warmed the lovely definition of my hi-res Alesis 24/96 discs. There just seems to be more there than my other digital cables could muster."
"another top choice for any music lover"

"super harmonious and nicely detailed"

Jazz For Japan recording sessions

by Hajime 25. March 2011 17:33

Yesterday, on March 24, I was invited to observe an all-star jazz recording project at the famous Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California. This charity recording project, named "Jazz For Japan," was conceived by Larry Robinson, a former jazz drummer and now CEO of Avatar Records.

On March 17, Larry was having lunch with his staff and talking about the recent earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster in Japan, and how his friends and jazz musicians tour Japan all the time and appreciate Japanese jazz fan's support of their music. Then, an idea came -- to record an album, the jazz version of "We Are The World," if you will, by inviting all the jazz musicians he knew.

He and his staff began making phone calls, and in less than a week, a two-day recording session was scheduled at Capitol Studios, who very generously donated the precious studio time for the charity project. Everybody worked for free on this project, including the musicians, recording engineeer John Van Nest, several assistant engineers at Capitol Studios, Bruce Monical who volunteered his vintage mics and amps, the staff at Avatar Records, a filming crew with HD cameras, and even the caterer who provided snacks.

Every musician they called said "yes" except these who were out of town. The legendary musicians came and went, and groupings were decided on the spot. They picked a song from the list prepared by the producer, talked among themselves about how to go about it, and rehearsed for 10 to 15 minutes, and boom! The level of musicianship was so high that most tunes were recorded in just one take.

The musicians who came on the first day (March 23) included Steve Gadd, Tom Scott, Billy Childs, Nathan East, George Duke, Marcus Miller, Everette Harp, David T Walker, Clarence McDonald, Ricky Minor and the Tonight Show Band.

I was invited into Studio B on the second day, March 24. While I was there, first a quartet of Deron Johnson (piano), Larry Goldings (Hammond B-3), Chuck Berghofer (bass) and Peter Erskine (drums) recorded an uptempo and swinging "Mr. PC." Then, Billy Childs took over the piano and Larry Goldings switched to Suzuki Melodion (aka melodica or pianica) to play the role of a horn player, and the group recorded a beautiful version of "Body and Soul." It was then followed by a piano trio version of the same song by Childs, Berghofer and Erskine.

Then, bassist Christian McBride arrived. He joined Childs and Erskine for a trio rendition of "Invitation" and recoreded "Sophisticated Lady" in a sublime duo with Childs.

Before I had to leave, a group consisting of Herman Jackson on piano, Clarence McDonald on Fender Rhodes, Alfonso Johnson on electric bass, and Alex Acuna on drums played a funky, fiery and Latin-infused version of Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island."

The music they recorded was FANTASTIC! I was truly honored to be there and witness the creation of beautiful music by the greatest jazz musicians, all volunteering their time to help support the Japanese people.

According to Robinson, the music will be made available "within 10 days" for download on iTunes worldwide. He is also trying to release it on CD in Japan. They are also seeking to release the video contents (shot on HD) on DVD (Blu-ray?) and through broadcast in Japan and in the US through PBS. All proceeds will be donated to a Japanese relief organization. If and when the CD edition is released, Eastwind Import will surely try to distribute it worldwide!

To support the Japanese victims of the recent disaster, please support the "Jazz For Japan" project by buying their products and spreading the word.

Finally, I'd like to share the hand-written message given to me by Larry Goldings, the sentiment of which is shared by everyone involved in this project.

"I hope the power of music can have even a small positive effect on the tragedy that has taken place in Japan. Peace and Love!"

As a Japanese citizen living in the US, I'd like to thank Larry Robinson and everybody involved in this wonderful project. THANK YOU!!
